When you turn your heat on this winter how much do you think about the efficiency or the air quality that is coming from your furnace? Whether your furnace is old or new changing your furnace filter on a regular bases is important.  The standard one inch filter should be changed once a month  while the two and four inch filters should be changed  every two to three months.  Here are a few reasons for maintaining a regular filter schedule.



1)  Extending the life of your HVAC unit. The most common reason a furnace or A/C unit breaks down is because of a dirty filter. As dirt builds up in the filters, air can’t pass through the system then has to work hard, which can cause the system to overheat. When this occurs hopefully your system will only need to be repaired. If your furnace is older, not replacing filters could cause you to have to buy a new furnace. Replacing the filter is an easy inexpensive way to lengthen the life of  your HVAC unit.


2) Keeping energy costs down. When the filter gets plugged your system runs more which causes more energy to be used. And when it requires more energy to make your heating and air conditioning to work, it causes your utility bill to go up.  Statistics Canada says the average household spends about $2,200 a year on its energy bill. When you regularly change your air filter, you can save from 5 to 15 percent on your utility bills


3) Maintaining healthy air quality. This is very important if anyone in your family has allergies or asthma. Dirty air filters cause poor air quality and can worsen symptoms. If you have pets, it’s more important because pet hair and dander will build up in your system and then spread the particulates throughout your home. Once again changing your filter will help  improve the air quality in your home.


When you keep these three  reasons in your mind you will not only save money but also have a  clean peace of mind  knowing your family  will be breathing better air.  When  you are shopping for filters look at the MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value)  number.  It ranges from 1-12.  The higher the rating the more efficient the filter will be.
