5 Things to Check Before Hiring Any Duct Cleaning Company to Work in Your Home

Consumers looking for the highest level of home air quality are turning to Modern PURAIR’s whole home air purification systems.  These systems are installed inside the ductwork and can clean and disinfect the air as it passes through the system before being recirculated through the building.  These systems include a combination of a polarized-media air cleaner and germicidal UVC lights that are both installed into the ductwork.

People everywhere have a heightened sense of awareness of indoor air quality.  With people spending more time in their homes, the quality of air they are breathing has become top of mind.   Health Canada states that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, spreads from an infected person to others through respiratory droplets and aerosols created when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, shouts, or talks. The droplets vary in size from large droplets that fall to the ground rapidly (within seconds or minutes) near the infected person, to smaller droplets, sometimes called aerosols, which linger in the air under some circumstances.

The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system act as the lungs of the building.  It is constantly “breathing in and out” as it circulates air throughout the building and controlling the temperature.  Through this process, contaminants including those aerosols can also be spread.  The HVAC system recirculates all the air in your home 3-5 times per hour.

The furnace filter is used to block contaminants from reaching the furnace and being redistributed through the building.  Furnace filters are rated based on their MERV Rating.  MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value.  The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particles the filter will be able to block.  A MERV 6 filter is only 35% efficient and will only be able to block lint, dust, and pollen.  Consumers looking for a better level of protection, may look to add a MERV 13 furnace filter but should check their manufacturer’s instructions because most residential furnaces are not equipped to handle MERV 13 filters and can kill the energy efficiency of the system and even damage the furnace or air conditioner.  Further, the higher the MERV rating of the filter the more frequently you will likely need to replace the filter because it will quickly become blocked and could starve the system of air (pressure drop).

Whole home air purification systems use a combination of a polarized-media air cleaner and UVC Lights installed into the ductwork of the building.  A polarized-media air cleaner is installed in place of the standard furnace filter and has an electronic charge.  Particles are electronically charged and then captured in a replaceable media pad.  The  Modern PURAIR polarized-media air cleaner is 97% efficient.

For decades, independent lab studies have shown that the power of the UVC energy to inactivate surface and airborne bacteria and viruses like MERS, SARS, influenza, tuberculosis, coronaviruses⁴, and now Sars-CoV-2⁵.  The Modern PURAIR UVC light is 330% more powerful than standard residential UVC lights and will inactivate viruses, bacteria and other harmful pathogens that move past it in the HVAC ductwork. According to the American Journal of Infection Control, it takes 1,048 microwatts to deactivate the Sars-CoV-2 virus. The Modern PURAIR UVC light produces 1,500 – 5,500 microwatts from 13 inches to 1 inch away from the lamp which gives it a large 26” complete inactivation zone around the lamp within the ductwork. The Modern PURAIR polarized-media air cleaner and UVC Light provide the highest level of whole home air purification without the risk of pressure drop (starving the system of air) that you would have with a standard high efficiency furnace filter.

Your HVAC system recirculates all the air in your home 3 – 5 times an hour, redistributing air throughout your home that can carry smaller respiratory droplets. This makes your ductwork the perfect location to install a Modern PURAIR whole home air purification system to disinfect your air space 24 hours a day; naturally and without adding any chemicals, sprays, or gases to the air that you breathe.
