Unveiling the Winning Mindset: Qualities of a Successful Modern PURAIR Franchise Partner

As Chief Development Officer at Franchise GrowthLab, I have the unique opportunity to spend time and collaborate with the top minds in the franchise industry.  Being part of a team that has built a successful franchise system across multiple countries into the 100’s of units, has made me a student of the “franchise game”. This has led to a fascination and admiration for founders and the leadership teams of franchise brands. Each of these people have a unique vision for their company and brand and are HYPER-FOCUSED on the happiness of Franchise Partners and profitability of their locations.  At Franchise GrowthLab, we subscribe to a set of habits we have developed called The 10 Habits of Best in Class Franchisors.  We know when these habits are followed, it creates strong franchise brands who put their franchise partners in a position succeed in building large, scalable businesses, in their communities. This has led me to seek out and interview Founders, CEO’s and the leadership teams of franchise systems who have implemented these best practices and have positioned themselves for hyper-growth with a goal of discovering the secrets that set these brands apart! 

I recently had an opportunity to sit down with both Lane Martin Co-founder and John McMillan, Chief Growth Officer of Modern PURAIR out of Kelowna BC.

Lane, John and I chatted about a myriad of topics that will come out in future posts, but for the purpose of this blog, I wanted to focus on a few key points John McMillan highlighted after I asked him what I thought would be a simple question with a simple answer: What are the characteristics of the ideal Modern PURAIR Franchise Partner? To which John responded:

“Running a Modern PURAIR franchise isn’t just about knowing the ins and outs of ducts and filters. It’s about having the right mindset. The first thing that comes to mind is having that winners’ mentality.” 

I found his initial answer interesting. Not because I disagreed with him, but because I have asked dozens and dozens of franchisors what they feel are the ideal qualities of a franchisee and I usually get stock answers like; “they need to be relationship builders, be reliable, be a self-starter, strong communicator, etc.”  Not that I disagree with those either, I just liked how John went off in a different direction, so I asked him to elaborate. 

“ It’s not just about the ability to build relationships or be a self-starter, although those qualities are crucial. It’s about wanting to win. Running a business is a challenge. There will be obstacles, no doubt about it. But winners don’t just see obstacles; they see opportunities as they overcome them.”

That comment struck me… It’s such a powerful perspective and so true, it is a perspective that only comes from a team that has developed a culture around being the best and where winning is a non-negotiable. I wanted to know more about what he meant by “wanting to win”?

“It’s about having that inner drive, that hunger for success. You’re not just in it to get by and earn a living – you’re in it to thrive. Successful franchise partners have this burning desire to make things happen, to achieve their goals, and to be coached and continually improve.”

After listening to John longer, it was clear to me that he felt a “winners mindset” was more than just a competitive drive – winners had another characteristic that was a predictor of success which he succinctly described.

“As mentioned earlier, successful franchise partners don’t just have an aptitude for building relationships and being strong communicators – they are ‘problem solvers’. They don’t shy away from challenges; they embrace them and approach them as if they were doing a puzzle. It’s about finding the missing piece or figuring out whether you’re going around, under, over, or through those obstacles that get in your way.”

The initial intent of this interview with John and Lane was to capture insights for a blog piece on the factors contributing to Modern PURAIR being the fastest growing indoor air quality business in the country. However, it evolved into a rich conversation, yielding numerous nuggets of wisdom. These guys are smart and they are passionate about the success of their franchise partners. I can’t wait to share more highlights from my engaging discussion with Modern PURAIR.
